Since their discovery in the 1930s, Kuwait's oil fields have played a vital role in the country's economic growth. Having enjoyed ed an unprecedented boom since national independence in 1961, the country's oil fields currently account for a staggering estimate of 10 percent among all the oil reserves in the world. Producing nearly seven percent of the world's oil, the oil industry of Kuwait has helped the country's economy earn global recognition.

Out of the unknown

Now internationally prominent, the oil history in Kuwait began under the rulership of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, when the Kuwait Desert was seen to have a number of black patches of an unknown bituminous substance. Investigations in 1935 in the Burgan field of Kuwait revealed enormous reserves of oil hidden underground.

As the largest industry in the country, the oil industry has seen significant growth in terms of oil fields. One noteworthy expansion are the newly opened Kuwait North Oil and Gas Fields. Comprising five major fields, the northern oil fields are Sabriya, Rawdhatain, Bahra, Abdali and Ratqa. Owned by the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, these oil fields are expected to sustain a high level of capacity.
