About Wuxi China
Often referred to as “Little Shanghai”, Wuxi is located in the Yangtze River Delta area, 128km
northwest of Shanghai and 183km southeast of Nanjing. Situated on the shores of China’s third
largest lake, Tai Hu, Wuxi also offers visitors an abundance of natural scenery, local attractions
and cuisines during their time in the city.
Wuxi is one of the most economically developed cities in China, rated 9th out of 659 cities in
the nation; the city is also famous within China as a tourist destination. Recently listed by the
National Tourism Administration as one of the top ten tourist cities in China, Wuxi’s landscape
embodies the beauty of the Yangtze River, the Grand Canal that flows through the city, Taihu Lake,
in the many fountains and gardens throughout the city.
The natural attractions of Wuxi include Tai Hu Lake, Turtle Head Peninsula Park and the serene
Li Garden. Man-made attractions feature the Three Kingdoms Film and Television studios and the Ling
Shan Buddha, which standing at 88m, is one of Asia’s tallest standing statues of the Buddha. Nearby
the Ling Shan Buddha vicinity is also the Ling Shan Fan Gong or Ling Shan Palace – the home of the
recent World Buddhism Summit in 2010. With its beautiful architecture and intricate decoration, it
is a must visit site of the city.
In addition to sightseeing, visitors are able to indulge in its famous Jiangnan cuisine
including the “Three Whites” of Tai Hu – white fish, white bait and white shrimp prepared in
numerous dishes. Tai Hu is also renowned for Hairy Crabs which are in their peak for eating in
October and November each year. Other celebrated examples of Wuxi cuisine are the succulent Wuxi
Pai Gu or spare ribs, Yang Shan Honey Peaches, Wuxi Xiao Long Bao, tasty soup dumplings and many
more.
