About Durham, NC

Known as the Bull City or the City of Medicine, Durham is located in the heart of North Carolina and welcomes over 5 million visitors each year. Whether you are traveling for one of Durham’s 40 annual events, to visit a university, or to experience its museums, shopping, and cuisine––one thing’s for sure, there is lots to do in Durham.

For travelers looking for art and culture, some must-see museums include the Hugh Magnum Museum of Photography, the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and the North Carolina Central University Art Museum. If you’re bringing the kids along, be sure to check out the Museum of Life and Science, which was rated among the top-four family friendly museums by Family Fun Magazine.

Research Triangle Park, one of the oldest and largest science parks in North America, is a 7,000-acre development that is currently home to 157 companies. Centered in southeast Durham, Research Triangle Park was given its name because its perimeters are defined by three major universities: Duke University in Durham (and later North Carolina Central University), the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

These major universities provide the city with a wide array of sporting events and entertainment as well. Whether you are attending a Blue Devils game at Duke University or a baseball game at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, the city of Durham comes alive in support of its hometown teams.

During your stay be sure to experience the shopping scene of this fascinating city. There are plenty of malls and antique stores to browse through during your visit. Much of Durham’s shopping is closed to traffic, making it a more relaxing experience, especially when traveling with kids.

When it’s time to tempt your palate, sample some fine cuisine at one of over 300 restaurants in the area. Afterwards be sure to check out the city’s nightlife featuring trendy bars, nightclubs and theater.
