The epitome of big city America, Chicago, or the ‘Windy City’ extends for nearly 40 kilometres (26 miles) along the southern shoreline of Lake Michigan in north-eastern Illinois. In fact this location, on a main inland water route, was one of the main reasons which enabled Chicago to become an important part of America's expansion towards the west.
