About Abu Dhabi, UAE
Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is also the largest of the seven
emirates. Around 2 million people, of whom 80% are expatriate workers, reside in Abu Dhabi which
lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast of the UAE.
The majority of the expatriate workers currently residing in Abu Dhabi come from countries such as
India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Egypt, and various countries from across the Arab world.
Oil was first found in Abu Dhabi in 1958 and the development of the emirate was only a matter
of time. 50 years ago Abu Dhabi had very few buildings and concrete structures, but today some even
consider Abu Dhabi to be the richest city in the world with dazzling skyscrapers and apartment
complexes everywhere.
A modern city with well maintained roads and broad boulevards, Abu Dhabi is a shopper’s
paradise with jewelry, clothing and electrical goods being the main draw. Known within the region
for its greenery, Abu Dhabi features many parks and gardens which add on to the city’s aesthetic
value.
During recent times, Abu Dhabi has increased its efforts in trying to position itself as the
"Cultural hub" of the Middle East and is home to a number of cultural institutions including the
Cultural Foundation and the National Theater. Work is currently under way to create an upscale
cultural district on Abu Dhabi's Saadiyat Island. Once completed, this US$400 million Guggenheim
Museum will display a rare collection of modernist and contemporary art.
