A truly magnificent sight, the Royal Garden of Herrenhausen is the heritage left behind by the
Kings of Hannover. This attraction is made up of four gardens namely; the Great Garden or Großer
Garten, the Berggarten, the Georgengarten and the Welfengarten. The Great Garden is considered the
most extravagant out of the Herrenhausen Gardens, whereas the Berggarten is a vegetable garden
turned botanical wonder. Georgengarten and Welfengarten possess the traits and styles of an English
Garden and are mostly used for recreation and leisure.
The Great Garden is the largest of all the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen which spans over 50
hectares across. During the Hanovian era, the maintenance of the garden was commissioned by Sophia
of Hannover to Martin Charbonnier. Within the centre of this magnificent botanical wonderland are
the ruins of Herrenhausen Castle. Apart from the enchantment brought by the sight of the beautiful
shrubbery, the Great Garden is the venue for events such as The Festival of Small Arts, The Small
Festival in the Great Garden, Festival Week Herrenhausen and is also where the International
Firework Competition takes place. During summer, the garden's Garden Theatre is home to the State
Stage of Hannover with musicals and theatrics. Apart from the obvious beauty and attraction of the
gardens itself, the garden fountains are the focal point, which in ideal weather can reach up to a
maximum height of 80 meters. Another attraction of the Great Garden is the showcase of art by Niki
de Saint Phalle at the modified ghetto.
Before the Berggarten became a haven of exotic plants it used to a vegetation ground for the
royal court, however after the commission of the conversion to botanic, the splendour of the garden
grew to what it has become now. Amongst the sights are the themed displays, the highlight of
Berggarten. The Georgengarten is positioned in the southern area of the Royal Gardens and acts as a
park as well as the mansion's gardens. The Welfengarten is home to the University of Hannover,
whereby the Welfenschloss Castle found in the middle of the garden has been utilised as the
university's main building. The Lower Saxony Steed, a Bronze sculpture is another sight available
within the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen.
Offering the splendour of beautiful shrubbery amidst delightful botany, the Royal Gardens of
Herrenhausen are the ideal place to relax in nature's beauty and tranquillity. Visit this
