The Leineschloss Castle is an incredibly beautiful and historic building to visit in Hannover. Also known as the Leine Castle, the building serves as the Lower Saxony federal state parliament. This majestic castle lies picturesquely along the Leine River in the city. In eras long past, the building was the residence of previous Hanoverian kings. For many locals, the castle stands as a reflection of German life in past centuries as well as the changes that the country has undergone with regard to its leadership. During the reign of the Hanoverian kings, the castle was the centre of the ruling dynasty whereas today it is the forefront of Lower Saxony’s democratic rule.

The Leineschloss Castle has a colourful history that dates back to as early as the 1300’s. The first building constructed upon the site of the castle was a Franciscan monastery that was built in the 1300’s. In 1636, the Duke of Brunswick-Luneberg began construction of a castle on this site to serve as his residence. Between the periods of 1816 and 1844, the castle was completely re-built by architect Goerg Ludwig Friedrich Laves. However, the entire building was burnt down during the Second World War. The castle was once again re-built between the period of 1957 and 1962.
