New Zealand hotels are some of the adventurous destinations that are becoming increasingly popular among older Britons, an industry expert has claimed.

According to the Association of Independent Travel Agents (AITO), older tourists are taking advantage of their spare cash and travelling further afield.

Derek Moore, chairman for the AITO, explained that Auckland hotels and Bay of Islands hotels were becoming more attractive among older generations that have time to travel more.

He said: "Their kids have grown up and are much more self-sufficient these days so they are able to have a look at a bit more disposable income.

"Now they are becoming a bit more adventurous with their holidays; the southern hemisphere is much more popular like South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and this time of year."

Figures from the Office of National Statistics show that visits abroad by Britons grew by two per cent in the 12 months to July 2008.

Expenditure abroad also increased by four per cent during that period, rising to £9.4 billion.
