|QE2 could open to public in Dubai
Nakheel, the company which now owns the famous ship, has been reconsidering its plans in light of the current global downturn and the fact that the Queen Mary has become a successful tourist attraction in California despite few changes since it was brought out of service.
Having bought the ship for £55 million last year, Nakheel had intended to turn the QE2 into a centre-piece attraction in the city, but the firm has since experienced financial problems and has had to sack 500 staff.
The company told the paper: "In the light of huge popular interest and in response to a number of requests, Nakheel is investigating the possibility of opening the QE2 to visitors in her current condition for a short period of time before her refurbishment begins."
Currently docked in Port Rashid, the QE2 could be of great interest to visitors to the city staying in a Dubai hotel.
The QE2 was the flagship vessel of Cunard Line since 1969, according to qe2.org.uk.
