Holidaymakers heading to a Dubai hotel have been advised to understand the cultural quirks of the nation before heading off on their break.

The Lonely Planet travel guide's editor Tom Hall says his organisation has seen examples of holidaymakers heading to various parts of the world and getting in hot water because of their lack of knowledge of the regional laws.

Mr Hall advised: "You might party a little bit harder than you would at home and it's understandable that when you go on holiday, you want to let yourself the leash."

However, he pointed out that this could lead to holidaymakers forgetting their common sense at times.

The expert advised those checked into a nice Dubai hotel with food and wine on offer not to go overboard with the alcohol because it is "frowned upon".

Earlier this year the Foreign and Commonwealth Office released its annual British Behaviour Abroad report which found that Britons were most likely to be arrested in the United Arab Emirates.

Holidaymakers were advised this was completely avoidable if they respect the nation's religious and cultural customs.
