Green building standards and other environmentally-friendly practices could soon become law in Abu Dhabi.

The Urban Planning Council (UPC) has announced that should the move go ahead, the current Pearl rating system which recognises green building practices would be replaced by a new legally-binding code, reports Construction Week.

At the moment, the Pearl rating system is a purely voluntary code and building companies in Abu Dhabi have no legal obligation to follow it.

Saood Al Junaibi, UPC director of development review and urban design and senior spokesperson for Estidama, an organisation which promotes sustainability, told the website: "We are going ahead and assessing how much of this can be implemented, in what time frame and we are assessing the economical and operational issues that we might have."

If greener practices do become law, the result could be more comfortable visits for tourists planning a stay in an Abu Dhabi hotel.

In related news, Abu Dhabi is also looking to the future by establishing a fibre-to-the-home broadband network throughout the city.
