Details of the new terminal at Abu Dhabi airport have been released at the World Class Airports conference being held in the emirate.

The new terminal, which will open in phases, will have ten new gates and additional capacity for five million passengers, Gulf News reports.

Khalifa Al Mazrouei, chairman and managing director of the Abu Dhabi Airports Company, told the news provider: "An airport is a reflection of a city. Our airports must reflect the growth of our emirate with strong emphasis on safety and security, customer service and be environmentally friendly."

He added: "[The airport expansion] is in line with the government's direction to diversify our economy from oil and gas to include tourism. The terminal will provide that infrastructure to meet this directive."

Travellers to the emirate who intend to stay in an Abu Dhabi hotel may be interested to note that other features of the new terminal include a shopping park and property developments.
