The Al Hosn Palace, most commonly known as the Old Fort or the White Fort, is the oldest building in Abu Dhabi.

It started out as a round watchtower defending the only freshwater well on Abu Dhabi island in around 1761.

This tower was later expanded to a small fort in 1793, when it became the permanent residence of the ruling sheikh.

It remained the royal palace and seat of government until 1966.

The interior of the palace has since been renovated and now houses the Cultural Foundation, which runs the Documentation and Research Centre.

Here you can see traditional artefacts and photographs on display.

Watch out for the courtyard and the exquisite tile work over the main Northern Gate.

The palace is currently the subject of extensive historical, archaeological and architectural research.
