More than 12,000 people are expected to watch the 14th Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run when it starts on the morning of Friday February 20th.

The run is held in honour of Canadian Terry Fox who had most of his right leg amputated as a teenager when he developed a rare bone cancer, but then a few years later ran across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

Fox died in 1981, but the Abu Dhabi run intends to raise the equivalent of around £191,000 to fund cancer research in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Farid Dabaghi, the chairman of the Abu Dhabi run, told the National: "The thing that helps is they know the money they raise, every penny stays for cancer research in the UAE."

People staying in an Abu Dhabi hotel may choose to join the crowds and watch the competitors take on the run's 8.5 km course.

The United Arab Emirates has an economy built on oil and gas, and according to visitabudhabi.ae the region hosts the fifth biggest natural gas reserve in the world.
