The nominees have been announced for the 2009 BT Visit London Awards, the leading awards event for the capital's tourism industry.

Now in its sixth year, the initiative recognises various tourism sectors, from London hotels and attractions to events and industry professionals.

One of the biggest categories covers the city's leading visitor attractions, with London Zoo, the National Portrait Gallery and the Imperial War Museum among the nominees this year.

The London Dungeon and the Churchill Museum have been shortlisted for the 'best tourism experience' award, while Earls Court & Olympia and the Natural History Museum are both up for the sustainable tourism honour.

Visit London chief executive Sally Chatterjee said: "The BT Visit London Awards celebrate London's world-class tourism offer and recognise and reward outstanding achievement within the industry.

"I would like to thank all the businesses that submitted entries, which have been of the highest calibre and made the short-listing process quite a challenge."

The tourism agency recently announced that visits to London's attractions increased by 8.4 per cent in June, when compared to the same month last year.
