London hotel visitors will soon notice the city's theatre district taking on a new appearance as the local government invests in a revamp of the area.

Westminster City Council unveiled a £6 million plan to "put the sparkle back into the West End" with new features including "twinkling lights and sparkly paving".

The first phase of the makeover will see coloured lighting columns built to mark out theatres on Shaftesbury Avenue, while the theatres will adapt their entrances to distinguish themselves from other businesses.

Lights will be brighter and more intense before and after shows to create a sense of occasion and bring the atmosphere of the theatre out onto the streets.

Westminster councillor Alan Bradley said: "The West End boasts the highest concentration of theatres in the world and they make a huge contribution to tourism and the economy.

"These plans will help put the sparkle back into the area and set it apart as a unique entertainment destination and an integral part of what makes the West End so special."

Other new features will include sparkly granite paving slabs in alternating black and white outside theatres and wider footpaths.
