An exhibition will be launched at Tate Britain next month exploring how the great landscape painter JMW Turner tried to imitate and surpass some of the seminal artists who preceded him.

London hotel guests will be able to see Turner and the Masters from September 23rd this year until January 31st 2010.

The show places some of Turner's most significant works alongside pieces by masters including Canaletto, Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian, as well as some of his contemporaries such as Constable and Bonington.

Thought to be the first display of its kind, the exhibition highlights how Turner developed his work and gained the reputation that he has today.

His approach of directly competing with artists who he considered equal to himself is thought to be almost unique in European art.

People planning a London hotel break this month can visit Tate Britain to see an exhibition of work by the landscape artist Richard Long, which will be open until September 6th.
