London hotel visitors will be able to pay a visit to the National Gallery over the coming months to discover the work of a painter who is considered the greatest Englishman to be involved in the Impressionist movement.

The display of the work of Alfred Sisley will be open until February 15th 2009.

Sisley, who was born in Paris to English parents, maintained British nationality throughout his life but only embarked on two painting campaigns in the UK – once in 1874 and again in 1897.

The National Gallery exhibition brings together Sisley's work from both of these periods for the first time.

Considering the gap of more than 20 years between the creation of the two sets of paintings, they effectively highlight the evolution in the artist's style and offer a representation of Sisley at his most creative.

The earlier set of works includes depictions of London and the surrounding area, while the later collection, which shows more maturity and flourishes of skill, portray the rugged coast of Wales.
