The Royal Academy of Arts will this year host a number of early drawings by John Frederick Lewis.

Lewis, who lived from 1804 until 1876, was best known for his vibrant depictions of life after spending a decade in Cairo.

The Royal Academy exhibition, which London hotel visitors will be able to see before October 26th, looks at his work as a young artist in London, when he showed potential as a painter of animals.

According to the academy, his work could be compared to that of his contemporary Edwin Landseer, who would become the leading animal painter of Victorian times.

The display, titled The Young Lion, includes a number of drawings of lions and other exotic animals, as well as studies of farm animals and landscapes.

Also on view are portraits and drawings by some of Lewis' family members who happened to be engravers, book-binders and painters.
