The Royal Albert Hall will host a performance of the rarely-heard Symphony No 1 by Rachmaninov in August.

Performed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the rendition will be part of the 34th show in this year's BBC Proms.

It will be part of a programme that also includes the first part of the operatic triptych Il trittico by Giacomo Puccini.

This short performance will see soprano Barbara Frittoli taking on the role of Giorgetta, an unfaithful barge-owner's wife who sees her infidelity lead to the death of her lover Luigi.

The 34th prom, which Kensington hotel visitors will be able to see at the Royal Albert Hall on August 11th, combines two passions of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra's principal conductor, Gianandrea Noseda.

Mr Noseda was born in Italy, hence his love for Puccini, but studied conducting in Russia, the home country of Sergei Rachmaninov.

The BBC Proms will begin on July 18th and continue until September 13th.
