It has been announced that movie star Rachel Weisz is to appear in a forthcoming production of the Tennessee Williams play A Streetcar Named Desire.

Weisz has starred in a number of Hollywood movies during her career, including The Mummy and Runaway Jury, as well as less mainstream films such as The Fountain and The Constant Gardener.

She will play the role of Blanche DuBois in the new production of A Streetcar Named Desire, which will open at the Donmar Warehouse next July.

It will not be her first appearance on stage – she was last seen in The Shape of Things at the Almeida Theatre in 2001 and previously in Design for Living and Suddenly Last Summer.

The new play will be directed by Rob Ashford, who took on his first directing job last year with the Olivier Award-nominated production of Parade at the Donmar Warehouse.

Weisz's character in A Streetcar Named Desire is a fading southern belle who moves in with her sister and her brutish brother-in-law Stanley, a move that turns out to have devastating consequences.
