The BBC has announced that it is to launch a new television talent show to find the star of a future theatre production of The Wizard of Oz.

Andrew Lloyd Webber will once again lead the search, having previously taken part in shows to recruit lead performers for The Sound of Music, Oliver! and Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The composer and show producer said that the previous talent competitions had provided "an incredible shot in the arm for musical theatre in Britain".

He added: "I can't wait to work with the BBC again in the hunt for Dorothy – an iconic role of course made famous by a young Judy Garland in the film in 1939, but, as a cat man myself, however, I approach casting Toto with considerable trepidation."

Auditions for the role of Dorothy will take place across the UK in early 2010 and the show will open in the West End later in the year.

London hotel guests can currently see Oliver!, which stars talent contest winner Jodie Prenger in the role of Nancy, at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
