The National Portrait Gallery in London is currently hosting a display of pieces inspired by the jazz musician, critic and writer George Melly.

London hotel guests will be able to see the collection of portraits by Maggi Hambling until January 10th 2010.

The display is a celebration of the relationship between Hambling and Melly, who became close friends while Melly, a popular figure in the music world, was alive.

A number of paintings and drawings made before Melly's death in 2007 feature in the show, as well as some works created over the past two years.

The portraits vary in tone from tender and funny to dark and challenging, dealing with themes ranging from love to loss.

Music fans will be booking their London hotels soon to visit the National Portrait Gallery exhibition Beatles to Bowie: The 60s Exposed, which will open on October 15th and run until January next year.
