The Mousetrap, the world's longest-running stage show, celebrated its 56th birthday this week and received a certificate from Guinness World Records to recognise its achievement.

Agatha Christie's 'whodunit' tale of murder at a country house debuted at the Ambassador's Theatre on November 25th 1952, moving to St Martin's Theatre next door in March 1974.

According to the Official London Theatre Guide, some 382 performers have appeared in the play during its run of more than half a century in London.

The biggest celebration of the show's longevity came in 2002, when Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh attended a royal gala performance.

Speaking at this week's ceremony, Sir Stephen Waley-Cohen, producer of the play, said: "A few years ago I was asked how long I thought [The Mousetrap] would run, and I said I don't see why it should ever end. I hope that remains true."

London hotel visitors can see The Mousetrap at St Martin's Theatre on West Street, where it is currently taking bookings until May 2009.
