London hotel visitors will this month be able to see the dazzling show Monkey: Journey to the West.

This 21st century opera was conceived and written by Chen Shi-Zheng, who also directs the production, and the show's music is composed by former Blur frontman Damon Albarn.

The visual concepts, costumes and animation featured in the opera are the work of Jamie Hewlett, best known for creating the characters in the virtual band Gorillaz.

Monkey: Journey to the West is based on an ancient Chinese legend of spiritual enlightenment and involves nearly 40 circus acrobats, martial artists and singers from China.

An orchestra comprising western and traditional Chinese instruments provides the music and the show is performed in Mandarin with English 'surtitles'.

London hotel visitors who want to catch this unique show will be able to see it at the Royal Opera House between July 23rd and 26th, during which time there will be seven performances.
