|London theatres celebrate record year
The Society of London Theatres (SOLT) revealed that theatre visitor numbers exceeded 13 million for the first time last year, while takings increased to almost £470 million.
Two-thirds of the tickets sold were for musicals, with London hotel visitors and theatregoers showing a particular interest in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Grease.
These shows were thought to be helped by the fact that their lead performers were chosen on TV talent shows, while one of the most successful plays, Equus, was boosted by the fact it featured a big name star Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe.
SOLT commercial manager Paul James said: "The story this year is of a vibrant sector. I think we are set fair for an excellent year."
There were a total of 17,455 theatre performances in London last year, attracting an average attendance of 781 people per show.
