|London named Europe's best city
London took top spot in the European city category ahead of Edinburgh, Paris, Barcelona and Rome.
The capital outclassed its continental rivals by a substantial margin in some cases, garnering 30 per cent more votes than Paris and two-thirds more than Rome.
Many voters said that, while London had experienced its "doldrum years", it now boasts enough attractions and appealing features to make it one of the most vibrant cities in the world.
Several respondents also said that, for visitors who are willing to part with some money to dine in London's top restaurants, the city can compete with Paris in the gourmet cuisine stakes.
A number of other UK cities were mentioned just outside the top five in the Sunday Times awards, including York, Brighton and Bath.
