People planning London hotel trips this year have been offered a guide to the new attractions and events that will be coming to the city.

At the top of the Visit London list is the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII's accession to the throne, which will see permanent displays and temporary exhibitions installed at Hampton Court Palace and the Tower of London.

There will be a number of other anniversaries this year, including the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin, which will be celebrated at the Natural History Museum, and the 250th birthday of Kew Gardens.

One of London's most popular attractions, the Victoria and Albert Museum, will open new galleries this year exploring performance art as well as a new area to display the late Sir Arthur Gilbert's collection of gold, silver, micromosaics and gold boxes.

A visit to south-west London will be of interest to tennis fans from August this year following the opening of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, which includes a viewing platform that offers panoramic views of Wimbledon's famous centre court.

There will be plenty of exhibitions opening in London in 2009, including a display dedicated to Picasso at the National Gallery and a showcase of work by Anthony van Dyck at Tate Britain.
