People planning a visit to London between February 7th and March 8th this year may want to head to Kew Gardens if they have an interest in plants and horticulture.

The popular attraction will help its visitors banish the winter blues by presenting a month-long exhibition of orchids and exotic plants entitled Tropical Extravaganza.

Kew is home to one of the world's oldest and most comprehensive orchid collections, with hundreds of brightly coloured varieties of the flower housed in the Princess of Wales conservatory.

There will be a special new display presented at Tropical Extravaganza featuring orchids that have been placed to look like ribbons around a birthday present, to celebrate Kew's 250th anniversary in 2009.

Other highlights of the exhibition will include Darwin's Orchids, a showcase of specimens collected by Charles Darwin during his voyage on HMS Beagle.

Visitors to Kew Gardens every Tuesday and Thursday between February 10th and March 5th will be able to take part in behind-the-scenes tours of the 6,500-square-metre tropical nursery, which is normally closed to the public.
