|Holidays at home 'the best option for British residents'
Sterling recently fell to a record low against the euro and has been consistently losing value against the dollar.
According to the Tourism Alliance, this situation will lead to the UK becoming a more competitive tourist destination among domestic tourists as well as foreign visitors.
The organisation described this new competitiveness as "a potential silver lining to the cloud of recession for communities and businesses".
Bob Cotton OBE, Tourism Alliance chairman, said: "The fall in the value of the pound represents a 21 per cent saving for people travelling to the UK from the eurozone and 27 per cent for those from the USA.
"This makes the UK the value destination for overseas visitors undertaking holidays during 2009 and means that a holiday at home is now the best option for British residents."
London hotels and other tourism products could prove more popular if VisitBritain and Visit England succeed in their appeal to the government to fund a marketing campaign with the slogan "Explore Britain".
