Gillian Anderson, the actress perhaps best known for her role in hit sci-fi TV show The X-Files, is among the performers confirmed to star in a forthcoming production of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House.

The new adaptation of the play is set to open at the Donmar Warehouse in spring 2009.

Anderson will play Nora, a banker's wife who causes controversy by rejecting the conventions of male-dominated society and taking out a loan to secretly support her financially beleaguered husband.

The play proved contentious upon its release in 1879 as it was considered critical of the traditional gender roles of the time.

While Anderson is best recognised for playing Dana Scully in The X-Files, she has appeared in a number of successful television and film productions recently, including the BBC's Bleak House and the award-winning movie The Last King of Scotland.

Her stage credits include What the Night is For and The Sweetest Swing in Baseball.

People planning London hotel visits next year will be able to book tickets for A Doll's House in late 2008.
