Gatwick hotels could prove popular this weekend as travellers take advantage of the three-day bank holiday break and head overseas.

London Gatwick airport revealed that it is expecting to handle almost half a million passengers between August 27th and 31st.

Friday is set to be the busiest day of all, with some 126,000 people flying to and from Gatwick.

According to recent research by the airport, British people could be making more of the time they get away from work.

A survey found that people waste an average of 40 hours' holiday time a year because they are unable to switch off and relax.

Mike Luddy, commercial director at London Gatwick, said: "Holidays are all too precious. That's why it's crucial we make the most of our down-time while we can. So we need to make sure we enjoy our bank holiday, relax, unwind and switch off."

The most popular flight destinations from the airport this weekend will include Malaga in Spain, Dalaman in Turkey and the Balearic island of Mallorca.
