The majority of British people still plan to take holidays despite the credit crunch, according to research by VisitBritain and Visit London.

While 90 per cent of the people polled claimed that they are cutting back on overall expenditure, only 45 per cent said they are planning to spend less on holidays.

Substantial portions of the public appear to be willing to cut back on essential items before giving up their holidays, such as food (80 per cent), fuel (74 per cent) and clothing (67 per cent).

However, what does appear to have been affected by the credit crunch is people's choice of destination, with 20 per cent of those who took a foreign holiday last year saying they intend to save money by choosing the UK instead next time.

Half (51 per cent) of the respondents said they have been put off travelling abroad by the belief that flight costs are rising.

Visit London marketing director Martine Ainsworth-Wells said that the current economic climate presents a good time to promote London hotels and other tourist products to British people.

"Despite undoubtedly tough times ahead, there are still major opportunities to promote the capital across the UK," she said.

"This is a time to hit the accelerator, not the brake. That is why Visit London has just launched a four-month major programme of activity to sell our message throughout the world."
