|British Museum delves into Iranian history
Running from February 19th until June 2009, the extensive display will explore Iran in the 17th century by focusing on Shah Abbas I, one of the civilisation's most influential rulers.
Shah Abbas is an important figure in Iranian history as he provided a stabilising influence following times of civil war and foreign conflict.
He revitalised Shi'a Islam, a religion that is still practised today, and imbued Iran's economy with a new strength by establishing trade links with cultures in Asia and Europe.
Highlights of the British Museum exhibition will include a number of gifts that Shah Abbas bequeathed to shrines in Mashhad, Ardabil and Qum, including Qur'ans, mosque lamps, paintings, porcelain and calligraphy.
This display is the latest instalment in a series of events at the British Museum focusing on great rulers. Previous exhibitions looked at the Chinese emperor Qin Shihuangdi and the Roman ruler Hadrian.
