According to advice website TripAdvisor, holidaymakers will find that researching a holiday will enable them to pack appropriately and have a better time.
It recommended using online forums to speak to other holidaymakers who have already visited places such as Singapore and to ask other travellers questions over the web.
Amelie Hurst, spokesperson at TripAdvisor, said: "Researching the local customs and laws is an integral part of the trip-planning process.
"Researching a destination before travelling to it can mean the difference between a dream holiday and a living nightmare."
Meanwhile, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office published its British Behaviour Abroad report this month, highlighting the trouble holidaymakers can find themselves in through lack of knowledge.
It claimed that Brits are being arrested in foreign countries after behaving in ways deemed inappropriate by local officials - situations that could be avoided by conducting proper research.
