There's still time to head to Singapore for the National Day Parade on August 9th.

Colourful processions will fill the streets as Singaporeans celebrate their country's 43rd birthday.

On the day, there will be a mass flag display by the Young NTUC followed by a party held at the Padang, where during the day people will be able to watch the celebrations on large video screens.

The days leading up to and following the parade will also be filled with fun, including Singapore My Home, a collection of photographs that convey the 'Singapore Spirit' and Bayfest, where shops in the Marina Bay Malls will offer promotions until August 10th.

Singapore became independent in 1965 after previously being ruled by the British.

While no-one is sure when the area was first inhabited, Singapore as we know it today began in 1819 when Sir Thomas Stamford Ruffles set up a trading post there after striking a deal with a claimant to the sultan of Johor that the British would support his claim to the throne.
