Penang Peranakan Mansion
Originally the residence of a rich personality, the Penang Peranakan Mansion should be included in any Penang sightseeing excursion.
Incorporating the Straits Chinese eclectic style of architecture, the mansion offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle as well as traditions and customs of the Perankan community.
Unique lifestyle
The Perankans were a prominent community made up of a group
of cultured Chinese people distinct to this part of the world. They
had maintained a unique, affluent way of life which has left
behind an legacy of noteworthy antiques.
The large mansion comprises an open air courtyard and
incorporates Scottish ironworks, Chinese carved wood panels and
English floor tiles. After decades of neglect, the mansion has
eventually been refurbished to its original glory of a stately
home. However today, the mansion keeps its doors open to the public
as a heritage museum.
Ornate sculptures
The influence of British Empire era in Penang is depicted by
the metal crown sitting atop of each side of the entrance pillars.
One side entrance leads you into the ancestral temple comprising a
roof embellished with ornate ceramic sculptures whilst the other
entrance opens up into a courtyard where you can see the gilded
cast iron railing.
The open central courtyard of the two storey mansion boasts
colourful tropical flowers. Overall, The East meets West
architecture as well as the carved Chinese-style wood panelling all
add up to make the mansion a valued landmark in
Penang.
