Penang Beach Carnival
The Penang Beach Carnival is a favourite festive
extravaganza that never fails to attract throngs of enthusiastic
participants and spectators. Presented as a community wide event
for people of all ages and walks of life not to mention many
foreign visitors, the carnival has established itself as a unique
celebratory event.
Typically about 20,000 exuberant people arrive to take part
or witness the extravaganza which commences early in the morning
and continues till late in the evening. Traditionally the Governor
officially closes the event after all the activities have been
held.
Many events and participants
The carnival consists of an array of both non-competitive
and competitive events with the aim of involving as many
participants as possible. A pleasant and friendly ambience prevails
throughout the extent of the festivities. In addition to beach
sport competitions, a procession and cultural performances are
presented. Typical activities include skimboarding, paintball,
beach volleyball, beach tug of war, a beach chingay performance, a
Mr. Beach Carnival competition and pillow
fighting.
Past instances of the carnival have included a procession of
colourfully decorated boats with the theme of fostering communal
harmony. Amongst the exciting events held have been fashion
shows, particularly focusing on batik designs presented on the
beachfront by attractive models.
Lots to do
The island of Penang has achieved the status of a
significant tourist destination with its attractive beaches and
vibrant multicultural heritage which features Chinese, Malay,
European and Indian influences. There is much to see and do in
Penang, with the wonderful cuisine in particular having acquired
international renown.
