More people could require the use of hotels in Wuxi soon as Caterpillar has announced it is to expand its operations in the location.

The company's executives have announced they have signed an agreement with local government officials to expand its multi-functional research and development (R&D) centre in Wuxi.

Currently, 500 people are employed at the facility as engineers and support staff, developing a range of products tailored to suit the needs of the needs of the expanding Chinese consumer base.

The site is strategically based close to a number of other development centres and manufacturing plants that are run by Caterpillar, including its manufacturing campus and engine development centre.

"The Wuxi R&D centre is enabling Caterpillar's product development success in China and other growth markets," said Caterpillar vice-president and chief technology officer Tana Utley.

Visitors to the city will soon be able to see a new attraction, as a futuristic bridge is to be constructed in the city's Xidong Central Park.
