Of the numerous Wuxi hotels, a name which stands out is the Millennium Wuxi. This exceptional
accommodation never fails to meet the expectations of its guests, providing attentive hospitality
and luxurious rooms. It is located 38 km from the Lingshan Grand Buddha.
The Lingshan Grand Buddha is one of the premier attractions in the Wuxi area. Although it is
a modern construction completed in 1996, the Buddha image conforms to the traditional principles in
the creation of such statues. The immense bronze statue of Buddha Sakyamuni stands 88 metres tall
and weighs over 700 tons, making it one of the largest Buddha statues in the world.
The Buddha is located at the site where the ancient Buddhist Xiangxiang temple stood; the
temple was rebuilt simultaneously with the construction of the Lingshan Buddha. The Lingshan
Mountain on which the statue stands was named thus by Tang Xuanzang, a Buddhist monk who is a famed
figure in the history of China.
The magnificent statue was constructed taking into consideration the 32 unique physical
attributes of the Buddha as described in Buddhist sutras. The Grand Buddha surveys all the beings
of the Buddhist universe with a compassionate smile. His right hand inscribed with the seal of
fearlessness is held with the palm facing forward, representing the eradication of suffering. The
Buddha’s left hand with forefinger and thumb forming a ring signifies the offer of happiness. These
are all aspects of benediction. The Buddha statue’s dignified and pleasing form signifies the
quality of mercy.
At the time of the Chinese lunar New Year’s Eve, a massive bell is sounded at Lingshan
mountain, drawing a multitude of Buddhist devotees. Visitors joining the pilgrims will be amazed by
the proportions of the statue.
