A shopaholic’s dream destination, Nanjing Road in China is an extremely popular retail area in
the country and offers the best shopping in Shanghai. A place for countless hours of retail
therapy, Nanjing Road in the city centre is home to a wide range of shops, fashion boutiques and
restaurants and runs from the Bund which is in the eastern side to Jing'an Temple.
Going back to 1851, Nanjing Road had its early beginnings as what was then a locale known as ‘
Park Lane’. Initially stretching from the Bund area to He'nan Road, its path was later extended to
encompass Zhejiang and Xizang roads respectively and in 1865 was officially named Nanjing Road.
Running around 5.5 kilometres in length, the area was made into a pedestrian street in 2000.
Shoppers will find over 600 business establishments in this neighbourhood including such
exclusive shops as Mont Blanc and Dunhill and such fast food outlets as Pizza Hut, McDonald's and
KFC. Close to the Central Market, Nanjing Road East is known for its pedestrian mall, traditional
food outlets and large department store which is one of the city’s oldest, while the western side
is famous for its exclusive retail shops and the Shanghai Exhibition Centre.
There are also a large variety of traditional shops selling such unique goods as embroidered
items, jade and silk. A great place to visit at night, this area has a variety of street musicians
as well who make that Shanghai shopping experience that much more memorable.
Millennium Hongqiao Hotel Shanghai is a short walk away from Shuicheng Road Station which
offers easy access to such attractions as Nanjing Road.
