The Hongqiao Area was one of the first areas in Shanghai to experience the real estate boom that signaled the beginning of a new era for the city. Shanghai’s old international airport was located in this region however following the construction of a modern facility the airport is now restricted to regional and domestic flights.

Hongqiao is home to Shanghai’s large expatriate community, the close proximity to schools, sports facilities and leisure centers has made this a favourite precinct for foreign families. The fast developing Gubei area in Hongqiao is a vibrant and fun place to hang out, while a large number of other market and entertainment districts can also be found here.

For many years Hongqiao was seen as a collection of office blocks, in recent times it has become a high end residential area coupled with some great entertainment and leisure facilities. A number of chic cafes and elegant restaurants can be found in this area apart from the vibrant pubs and nightclubs.
