People planning to stay in hotels in Beijing could find the city is gripped by the excitement of the forthcoming Chinese New Year celebrations.

The city is set to host a range of events to mark the start of the year of the dragon, with the events spread out over several days.

Also known as the Spring Festival, the new year's events will start in Beijing on January 23rd 2012 and run through to February 7th, offering plenty of opportunities to head to the streets to take in the fantastic parades and sample the delicious street foods on offer.

Highlights of the event each year include the amazing dragon dances, which bring hundreds of people on to the streets during the daytime and the incredible choreographed firework displays that take place at night.

There could be a large number of tourists watching the event, as the local government recently reported there had been a rise in visitor numbers during 2011.
