Tiananmen Square
Locations & Attractions|Tiananmen SquareThe present site of Tiananmen Square was established during the Ming dynasty by building Tiananmen Gate, though no public square was in existence at the time. Government departments and offices were arranged around a T- shaped courtyard. It is believed that this served as a precedent for the modern Tiananmen Square. In the 1860's invading British and French troops set up camp at Tiananmen Gate and were later allowed by the Qing Emperor to establish their base here. However, Tiananmen Square as we know it today did not come into being until the People's Republic of China was formed and the square was officially built in 1949. This square which has historically been used for gatherings was where Mao Zedong declared the People's Republic of China on October 1st 1949. Other important demonstrations such as the Allied Army's Victory March in 1900, Gen. Zhang Xun's march in 1917 and the elaborate Chinese National Day Parade in 1989 were staged here. A number of places of cultural and historical significance can be seen at the Tiananmen Square, such as Mao Zedong's Mausoleum, the Monument to the People's Heroes, the Great Hall of the People and the China National Museum. The strength, grandeur and cultural sophistication of China are demonstrated at Tiananmen Square. Hotels and other tourism related buildings are located close to the square, which is considered to be at the heart of Beijing. The Grand Millennium Beijing being a Beijing hotel near Tiananmen Square puts you within easy access of this wonderful creation. |
