Travellers have been advised that to enjoy the beauty of a destination like Sharjah they will need to be respectful of the city's customs.

According to Tom Hall, editor of the Lonely Planet travel guide series, Brits' desire to drink to excess can see them wind up in trouble with the local authorities and he recommended reading up on the local laws before checking into a Sharjah hotel.

"We have seen examples of people getting into trouble for overstepping the mark for behaviour that would be acceptable in other parts of the world," he said.

The expert added: "You have to understand what's acceptable and what's not in the specific place that you are going to."

Last month the Foreign & Commonwealth Office's British Behaviour Abroad report revealed that drink and drug use were one of the key reasons holidaymakers have problems with the local authorities when abroad.
