Originally built in 1896, Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House was declared a national monument which
later has been restored as a museum. This was the residential quarters of Dubai's former ruler
named Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum who ruled Dubai from 1921 to 1958. The building is located along the
Dubai Creek in the locality of Al Shindagha.
Built in a traditional Arabian architecture style, the house was converted to a fully fledged
museum after the death of Sheikh Saeed in 1958. It is known as the Museum of Historical Photographs
and Documents of the Emirate of Dubai which includes many historical photographs of Dubai from its
prehistoric period. The museum is divided into wings as per the different historical and cultural
periods. Presently this palatial home boasts of photos that depict the different generations of the
Al Maktoum family. Coins and stamps which are on display are also great evidence of the ancient
culture and lifestyle of Dubai.
The restoration of this house to a museum did not destroy the traditional architectural
designs as the wooden lattice screens, carved teak doors and windows, and the balustrade railings
are still preserved. The ventilation screens that are set into the walls are designed with floral
and geometric designs. The house also boasts of 30 rooms which are built around the central
courtyard. Visitors can enter this house from two sides which are from the creek side as well as
from the rear of the building which is believed to be the entrance of the family members.
Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum is a wonderful site to be visited by those who are on cultural tour.
